John, schottischer Arzt, Mathematiker und Satiriker, * 29. 4. 1667 Arbuthnot, Kincardineshire, † 27. 2. 1735 London; mit J. Swift und A. Pope befreundet; schuf in „History of John Bull“ 1712 die Gestalt des den typischen Engländer darstellenden John Bull , schrieb die Satire „Kunst der politischen Lüge“.
