Josef, österreichischer Mathematiker und Physiker, * 6. 1. 1807 Szepasbéla (Ungarn), † 17. 9. 1891 Wien; errechnete 1840 das nach ihm benannte Petzval-Objektiv , das 16-mal lichtstärker war als damals bekannte Fotoobjektive. Seine Arbeiten waren bahnbrechend für die Entwicklung der Fotooptik.
